Theater in Seattle has a long and rich history. "In early Seattle, traveling minstrel shows, Shakespearean orators and amateur acting companies played in the cookhouse of Henry Yesler's mill, and the whole town turned out."
Seattle's first real theater was built in 1879 (Squire's Opera House), and we had the last major vaudeville venue in the U.S., the Palomar, which lasted until the early 1950s. (These historical tidbits and the above quote are taken from a Seattle Times article archived at NorthWest Source; give it a look).
Today Seattle has a thriving theater community that rivals that of any major city. Major downtown stages hosting Broadway hits, a myriad of neighborhood venues, annual theater festivals, professional and amateur productions, theater houses big and small, you can find a little bit of everything.
Below are links to Seattle theaters and theater resources.
